Introduction

  • The word Ayurveda derived from AYU and VEDA. AYU means life VEDA means science or knowledge. Ayurveda means the science of life. The earliest codified document on Ayurveda is Charaka Samhita.
  • Charaka mentions that deals with advantage and disadvantage as well as happy and unhappy states of life along with what is good and bad for life, its measurement and the life itself (Charaka Sutra 1 - 4)". It is amply clear that Ayurveda is not only a system of medicine but also a way of life for complete positive health and spiritual attainments.
  • Ayurveda believes that positive health is the basis for attaining four cherished goals of life (chaturvidh purushartha) viz., Dharma, Artha, Kama, Moksha. All these four goals cannot be achieved without sound positive health.

Positive health is defined as

  •  Dosha Dhatu samya (well balanced metabolism)
  •  Prasanna Atma, Indriya, Manah (happy state of the soul, senses and the mind). Senses here mean the five organs of perception Gyanendriya viz., smell, taste, sight, touch, and hearing coupled with the organs of action – Karmendriya viz., mouth, hands, foot and organs of excretion and reproduction.

Fundamentals

Life is the union of body, sense organs, mind and soul.

The seven Dhatus are Rasa (chyle or nutrient fluid), Rakta (blood), Mansa (muscle tissue), Medas (fats), Asthi (bone, connective tissue), Majja (bone marrow) and Shukra (reproductive elements).

The three main excretions are purisha (faeces), mutra (urine) and sweda (sweat).

The three dosha are vata, pitta & kapha.

Any disturbance in this equilibrium causes malfunction and results in disease.

Disequilibrium in these measures lead to disease. Although absolute equilibrium of dhatu (basic tissues) is always not possible e.g. kapha invariably gets vitiated in the first part of the day and night, immediately after taking meals and in childhood, but a slight disturbance in the equilibrium of dhatu (basic tissues) does not cause any distinct uneasiness or vikara, hence in the case of natural disbalance of equilibrium of dhatus (basic tissues) does not cause any distinct uneasiness in the body and as such can be regarded as a normal condition. In other words equilibrium of dhatus (basic tissues) even includes conditions where there is minimal deviation from normalcy due to natural reasons.

“Lessons Learned” Strategy

“Lessons Learned” strategy is an integral part of our quality culture. The process includes identification of gaps, their analysis, risk mitigation and taking corrective actions. This approach not only addresses the issues but leads to actions to prevent similar occurrences in the future, and at the same time identifies what went well and how similar processes may benefit from this information.
Global Quality Metrics

The global quality metrics represent a selection of statistical analysis which have been agreed to at a global level. As part of innovation and continuous improvement, the selected quality indicators are monitored, measured and analyzed on a routine basis.
Quality by Design Principles for Sustainable Quality

The basic concept of QbD is that “Quality cannot be tested into the product, but it should be built into it”. We are implementing a “21st Century Quality Initiative” across the organization including R&D, technical and quality operations to perform quality, risk and knowledge management assessments.

We are investing in electronic applications, enabling the organization to establish harmonized processes through automation, develop site level metrics and indicators, and to put analysis and risk indication abilities to a new level of execution and control.

Research and Development (R&D)

The Company’s R&D strengths are in developing intellectual property in non-infringing processes and resolving complex chemistry challenges. Herboglobal  is in the process of developing new medicines, new dosage formulations, and applying new technology for better processes. The R&D Center,  provides a nurturing environment to a multi-disciplinary team for excellence. The Centre meets cGLP requirements, and is focused on the areas of organic synthesis, analytical research, dosage form development, pharmacology, bio-equivalence studies and drug delivery systems.

The instrumentation and analytical knowledge base at the Centre facilitate:

  • Complete impurity profiling in all products developed.
  • Development of analytical methods and specifications from raw materials, to non-compendial finished products.
  • In-house synthesis of reagents for analysing organolithiums and noble metals.
  • Accelerated and real-time stability studies.

This reflects the Company’s commitment towards developing innovative technologies and creating a knowledge base in chemical synthesis, high quality generic formulations and development of drug delivery systems.

1. Excellent infrastructure

The Centre is well equipped to handle various developmental challenges in the areas of oral and parenteral medications. Specifically, the available infrastructure includes:

  • Dedicated area and labs to handle potent substances like hormones.
  • Process Development and Scale-up Labs attached to the manufacturing unit.
  • An NDDS laboratory with specialized capabilities like nano-technology, hot melt extrusion, etc.
  • A unit to develop parenteral dosage forms ranging from vials to ampoules to pre-filled syringes to large volume parenterals.
  • A unit to develop opthalmic and nasal products using the BFS technology.

2. Excellent talent pool

  • A team of many scientists dedicated to development of generic formulations, many of which are first-to-file.
  • More than 180 patent applications have been filed by a dedicated IP team.
  • The scientific team is supported by two separate project management teams dedicated to oral solids and parenteral portfolios. A group of more than 150 supports all regulatory filings across various geographies.
Our Achievements and Capabilities

The Centre is capable of developing, scaling up and commercializing various dosage forms spread across tablets, capsules, soft gels, oral liquids, injectables (solutions, suspensions, lyophilized, etc.), and ophthalmic (three piece and BFS) and nasal delivery systems.The focus is to develop products for the US and EU followed by other international markets, including specialized markets like Japan.We can develop complex in-vitro analytical as well as bio- analytical methods for various molecules including extremely potent drug combinations to support the formulation development team.The R&D Centre has developed products and filed more than 200 ANDA’s, around 124 EU Dossiers for products and hundreds of Dossiers in other countries including Brazil, South Africa, Australia and China.The product range covers various pharmacological categories with special focus on anti-retroviral, anti-biotic, CNS and CVS drugs.
